Assignment
Nordiska Museet. New orientation and signage system; floor plan outlines, directions and brochures.
Digital slide show for the entrance hall. Sweden, 2007.

Challenge
Nordiska Museet, Sweden’s largest cultural history museum, celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2007.
Different “levels” of communication have been deve-
loped over the course of the year according to need
and independently of one another. But they lacked clarity and coherence, an expression individual to the museum. The existing orienta- tion system was dated, ugly and confusing. The museum’s dark entrance hall needed something to enliven the space, which at the same time could inform about current events.

Solution
A simple, toned down and dignified orientation system, which puts function and clarity first, while laying the ground- work for a strong and dynamic identity bearing communica- tion system, and, also, a digital slide show in the entrance hall.

Results
The changes were introduced in the spring of 2007.
Åsa Zäll, Director of Communications at Nordiska Museet: “The response from visitors and staff has
so far been enormously positive. The slide show in the entrance is seen as inspirational and beautiful, and the orientation system has made it a lot easier for the visi-
tors to find their way in the museum. We have finally got the coherent and beautiful orientation system that this museum has needed for so long”. Blog image
